Paschkerwitz

unforgotten village in Silesia

Germany

by Inge Andrews née Pfeiffer

It is now over 70 years ago since I last saw my village. We didn't leave voluntarily. The Soviet Army had advanced into Germany and we received orders to evacuate our village. We left on January 20th, 1945 and many years passed before anyone could see their home again.

Over the years people found a new place to live, but the memory of their old village will always stay fresh in their minds. In the meantime, some people have visited their old home while others have preferred to remember it the way it was. Some of us have tried to look up old friends and classmates in order to exchange information and memories. In this manner, I was able to obtain some photos and picture postcards which I would like to share with people who are interested in our village. Anyone who has some pictures, documents, and/or stories of interest regarding Paschkerwitz, is invited to get in contact with me.

In rememberance of Dr. William Yancey 1958 - 2010 who, until his untimely passing, had hosted the Paschkerwitz pages on his Web site. Will's mother came from the neighboring village of Langenau (now Cienin). They had visited Paschkerwitz together some years ago.

I would also like to thank the following people:

Monika Voss née Fischer (USA) for photos, picture postcards and the exchange of memories. Her grandfather used to be the postmaster in Paschkerwitz.
Gerhard Frost (Wetzlar, Germany) for photos of Paschkerwitz (Pasikurowice) and from Silesia. He has visited the village several times in recent years.
Christa Stock (Frankfurt, Germany) for picture postcards, photos and lists of people. Christa often visited her grandparents in our village.
Dora Rösler née Bursian (Kelheim, Germany) for a pictures and information. Dora was a neighbor of mine in Paschkerwitz.

Gisela Gerick née Hähndel (Canada) for pictures. Gisela's grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Gerbatsch, were our neighbours.
Gertrud Guhl's granddaughter Verena for pictures of her grandmother & her family.
Christa Matzke née Jenke (Naumburg/S) for photographs of her family and information. Christa is a friend of my late sister Edith.
Manfred Schmitt Born 1955 in Hessen. His address: Sommerlandstr. 2, 83233 Bernau, Chiemsee, Germany. Mother Erika Basler from Kawallen, Kreis Trebnitz grandparents Hermann & Luise Koch from Mahliau, Kreis Trebnitz.
Thomas Fabian for photos of his family. Thomas is the grandson of the village blacksmith Fritz Fabian. Thomas visited Paschkerwitz in 1994.
Lotte Frost's family for providing photos. Lotte and I used to play together. We were evacuated to the same village.
Reinhard Kiefer for photos and documents. Reinhard is the son of Walter Kiefer and the grandson of Karl Kiefer.
Herbert Mané for a photo of his family and exchange of memories. Herbert and I were class mates.

Discontinuity and nostalgia are most profound if, in growing up, we leave or lose the place where we were born and spent our childhood, if we become expatriates or exiles; if the place, or the life, we were brought up in is changed beyond recognition or destroyed.
